Skintex® MR III Blanket
A front line technology to help defeat mosquitoes and diseases they spread.
Do you know what the deadliest animal in the world is? Most people in South Carolina would probably say snakes. Wrong!
The most deadly animal in the world is the mosquito! As quiet and little as it is, it is responsible for over 1 million deaths per year. Over 400,000 deaths per year from one disease, Malaria. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Can you imagine one child dying every 30-45 seconds due to a mosquito bite? Most people in the USA will say no way. However, this is a reality in parts of the world.
We are a textile chemical company located in South Carolina. Our products are used by textile mills to help produce fibers and fabrics. We have also developed a product that we think is a game changer in the fight against insect borne diseases. It is the Skintex® MR III Blanket! Skintex® MR III is the only EPA registered microencapsulated insect repellent system for textiles. The Skintex® MR III Blanket is a unique vector tool that is not currently being used to fight insect borne diseases.
Currently, the main tools used to control the spread of these diseases are the mosquito net and inside residual spraying. These are not the most useful tools when you have a transient population as we have today. If a family has no home they have no where to hang a bed net or walls to spray. The Skintex® MR III Blanket can help protect these people when they have no structure in which to hang a net or spray.
How does the Skintex® MR III Blanket work? It is simple; when the cover is in use the microcapsules burst which releases permethrin onto the textile. This creates a HOTFOOT scenario for a mosquito. When a mosquito lands on the textile and attempts to feed, it will come into contact with permethrin and permethrin filled microcapsules. Once the microcapsules burst, the mosquito is dosed with the released permethrin. The result is a DEAD or KNOCKED DOWN mosquito. In independent WHO tube testing, the cover provides 100% KNOCKDEAD/KNOCKDOWN results. In independent Chamber or Cage testing, the result is the typical amount of landings, but ZERO bites.
Whether it has been independent lab testing, independent field trials or customer feedback, the Skintex® MR III Blanket has proven to be very effective at killing disease carrying insects. It has been toxicologically tested and tested for skin contact. It is considered safe for human use.
Why is disease prevention so important? Malaria is a huge financial burden for not only a country, but families as well. Countries with high rates of malaria can spend a huge percentage of their national budget trying to prevent the spread of the disease. Malaria is Uganda’s leading cause of morbidity and mortality. According to the Ugandan Ministry of Health, malaria accounts for 25-40% of outpatient visits to health facilities and is responsible for nearly half of inpatient pediatric deaths. Malaria can devastate a family’s financial well being.
Insect borne diseases will always be a challenge. Over the next 5-10-15 years we expect large growth in products that can help control or eradicate insects that spread these deceases. Our product, The Skintex® MR III Blanket, is a tool that is available today and can play a very significant role. With the millions of displaced people in the world the Skintex® MRIII Blanket is ideal. By 2030, our hope is to be able to say the Skintex® MR III Blanket was one of the tools that helped wipe out malaria.
The Skintex® MRIII Blanket is a everyday tool that can be used by families, even in countries where malaria is not present. We have had people place it on the ground under lawn chairs which not only prevented mosquito bites, but also other types of insects from biting their ankles and legs. We have had soccer moms use it at their kid’s soccer games. It is a great camping tool. In addition to the cover, the Skintex® MRIII treatment can be applied to essentially any garment in the market, shirts, pants, hats, tick guards and so on. No matter the scenario, we have always had outstanding reviews for treated garments and gear.
With the Skintex® MR III Blanket’s performance in mind, we want you to experience its great benefits while at the same time helping us rid the world of malaria and other insect borne diseases.
Skintex® MRIII Blankets can help start saving lives today!
The EPA has approved Skintex® MR III treated blankets and apparel for use. We have completed lab testing using third party labs and we have had field trials completed in Africa. All of the results have been outstanding. The feedback from the small amount of people in Africa that has been so lucky to receive a Skintex® MRIII Blanket is incredible.
Results from third party lab studies and field studies performed in Africa are below.
African hut studies revealed the following:
- The use of the Skintex® MRIII Blanket reduced indoor resting density of mosquitoes and also reduced mosquito entry into the structures where treated Skintex® MRIII Blankets were used, (91.4% indoor resting deterrence and 88.9% entry deterrence).
- There was a significantly higher mosquito feeding inhibition in huts with treated Skintex® MRIII Blankets as compared to huts with untreated blankets.
- There was significantly higher mosquito mortality in huts with the treated Skintex® MRIII Blankets compared to huts with untreated blankets. The mortality ranged between (92-100%)
African field studies revealed the following:
- The majority of the respondents found the Skintex® MRIII Blanket to be convenient to use in hot areas due to its light fabric.
- Respondents liked multiple usages of the Skintex® MRIII Blankets, including use as bedding and as a wrapper.
- Most of the respondents who received the treated Skintex® MRIII Blankets reported being protected from mosquito bites. Results showed that the Skintex® MRIII Blankets was effective.
